Entrants are invited to submit an English translation of a published poem from any language, ancient or modern, together with the original poem and a commentary of no more than 300 words.

The submitted translation should be no more than 60 lines long; entrants may submit an extract if their chosen poem is longer. Self-translation is not accepted.

Guidelines

Entrants aged 18 or under are invited to submit an English translation of a published Polish poem, together with the original poem, plus a commentary of no more than 300 words if entering the 18-and-under and 14-and-under categories. Entrants to the 10-and-under category are not required to submit the commentary. The submitted translation should be no more than 60 lines long, so entrants may submit an extract if their chosen poem is longer. Self-translation is not accepted. 

Prizes

  • One winner in each category (18-and-under, 14-and-under, 10-and-under): £100
  • Certificates for all entrants

Awards

All winning translations are printed in a booklet that is distributed at the Stephen Spender Prize ceremony in London in November, and published on the Stephen Spender Trust website.
